WE DO HAVE POWER
It’s not up to you to save the world, but it can’t be done without you.
“Isn’t it up to governments and corporations to fix the system? Is there any point in me doing anything?”
Government and business has most responsibility
First and foremost, the science is clear governments and businesses have responsibility for most of the change needed such as shifting to green energy, better public transport and a regenerative economy. It is not up to individuals to fix the climate crisis on their own, one consumer choice at a time.
We still can influence things though
BUT, that doesn’t mean we have no power or the only option is to wait for our leaders to take action. The research is clear, there isn’t time for to wait for any one group to act, whether its business, government, communities or other individuals. We need a two thirds reduction in the impact of consumption from wealthy parts of the world, in just 10 years!!! We must start changing today.
All action needed from all actors
Also the science is clear there are things that we all need to do regardless of the system change. Like limiting flying and shifting diets. Even if we did bring about a globally regenerative economy, if people are still flying regularly through their own choice this will still lead to staggering environmental harm. So in the end there are some things we can do that really will help.
Of course, this would be easier in a world where the systems don’t encourage environmental harm so strongly. It would be easier to avoid flying if trains were cheaper and easier to keep electronics if they didn’t break all the time. But human behaviours influence supply and demand, and therefore the system.
